General FAQS

Who can create a campaign?

Anyone with a paypal BUSINESS account can register and start a campaign EXCEPT if you live in any of the countries on the U.S. OFAC sanctions list.

I'm a 501(c) - Can I raise money here?

Yes if you are the organization and you are DIRECTLY raising funds and you are compliant with the Paypal Charity Requirements

Can I raise funds for a registered charity?

Yes, if you are the organization and you are DIRECTLY raising funds.

What can I raise money for?

Medical funds, event fees, tuition, business start ups, new products, etc. You can not raise funds for any illegal purpose, run open ended concept campaigns like "disaster relief" or "hurricane relief" or "feed the hungry" without a specific end goal and valid recipient. For example you can raise funds to buy food for your own food program or to co-ordinate your own relief efforts or your own entry fees to a charity event, walkathon, etc as part of your pledge activities. You can not raise funds for, on behalf of, or in the name of established organizations to send to them.

Payments Goals & Fees

How much is it?

It's free to join and create a project. When you receive donations, you keep 95% (less what paypal charges you). Your donors are never charged a fee. Managed Projects (where we do all the setup and reward fulfillment) are 30%.

How much can I raise?

You can raise up to $50,000.00 (USD) per campaign. You can have 2 campaigns running at any given time and you can run a maximum of 4 campaigns in a 12 month period.

How do I get my money?

Donations are processed\ and paid to your paypal BUSINESS account immediately. If you don't have a BUSINESS account, your donations will fail. Your balance display on the site will reflect updates when the script runs.

How do I know how many donations I have?

Log in and go to My Fundraisers link in the Fundraisers tab, then choose Donors Report tab. This is only visible to the owner of the campaign. The updates run periodically and will on your page when the transactions are complete and the updates have been processed.

What if I don't reach my goal?

Your goal is a target, not a requirement for funds. We operate on a "me funding" level where people contribute incrementally as opposed to the 100% model where people pledge to contribute if a specific goal amount is reached and then contribute.

Give Backs Info

Do I have to offer a Give Back for my project?

You don’t have to but many campaigns do and sometimes the incentive is WHY someone donates to your campaign. If you're not sure what to offer, consider what you're raising money for.

If you're trying to record a cd or make a movie, then you should definitely put a copy as a Give Back. You could even go further and offer things like their names in the credits, or producer status with larger contributions. If it's the trip of a lifetime, offer all your great photos on a portable drive. If you're starting a jewelry company, offer limited edition bracelets. As long as it is not specifically excluded by SocialArchitect.com, Paypal Terms of Service and otherwise doesn't violate our terms of service, your rewards can be pretty much anything at all.

What should I give at what donation levels?

It depends on what your campaign is about, what (if anything) you're producing from it etc. See the list below for some thoughts. If someone is giving to your cause, what is a good trade off? Sometimes a Backer is helping because they want the Reward and are willing to donate your amount to get it. Obviously, a T-shirt in return for a $100 donation doesn't quite fit the value proposition - try for a win-win-win situation.

On pricing consideration, keep your donor in mind in terms of value AND keep in mind that if you don't supply the reward as promised, you have to return their money (it's in the same sized print in the Terms of Service) - so be realistic.

The maximum allowable cash value of your rewards is $100.00 USD

Some Give Back Ideas

  • Pre-sell your goods
  • Offer your space for events
  • Campaign donor party
  • T Shirts or other merchandise with your logo on it
  • Cameos, Appearances and/or Producer credits on your CD, Video or DVD
  • Advanced-copy DVD or CD downloads
  • Prints from your stills

  • A monetary return on investment, share of a company, share of profits, or loan repayment.
  • Real estate property
  • Entry into a raffle or contest
  • Gift cards
  • Firearms or weapons
  • Prescription or illegal drugs
  • Pornography or sexually explicit materials

A quick guideline is - if you can't legally sell it, buy it, provide it, possess it or trade in it with the general public (even if you're licensed to do so in your home area) you can not use it as a perk.

What if I don't have a valuable Reward to offer?

SocialArchitect.com is happy to provide site merchandise to campaigns without perks on a case by case basis. Let us know what you're doing and we'll see how we can help.

Contributor FAQS

Paypal Related FAQS

Can I donate without a Paypal account?

Yes. When you reach the Paypal screen, choose the "Don't have a PayPal account" link. You can also enter a different email address if you have a paypal account and don't want to use it.

Do I have to register to donate?

Yes. To control spam and nuisance false donations, an account is required to donate. Your information is strictly private and is never shared. Your payment information is handled via paypal and is not processed, seen, saved, stored or otherwise captured here in any fashion.

Can I donate anonymously?

Yes. To keep your information private, choose the "Donate Anonymously" option when completing the transaction, That will keep your donation off the Donors page but will not interfere with your receiving your Reward (if applicable).

Are contributions final?

Yes.

Where does the money go if the funding goal isn’t reached?

The project owners keep the money that they raise. If you are unclear as to how these funds will be used, you can contact the project owner directly by sending a private email. We believe that even a little funding can help them to continue refining their idea; after all things start small.

What do I receive for supporting a campaign?

That depends on the campaign. Some Campaigns offer Give Backs which are items / services / whatever that a campaign creator provides essentially as a thank you to a donor at specific support levels. They can be anything (allowed by the terms of service). T-shirts, stickers, jump drives with the film or photos of the event, movie credits, experiences, tickets, downloads, autographed copies, limited edition items, etc.

Do I own anything I donate to?

No. Your support of a campaign is a donation, not an investment or a purchase. Rewards or incentives offered are thank you gifts.

How do I know if a project will be (or was) completed?

You don't really know for sure if a campaign will be completed as planned. When you read about it, do you feel confident the project is feasible? Is the funding level reasonable? Is the goal something you feel comfortable with? Are there any updates to the project pages? Feedback? Does the project page tell you what you need to know? If you had questions, did the campaign promoter answer them to your satisfaction?

To check on completed campaigns, see the Completed Campaigns section as well as the News since we LOVE to share success stories.

What happens after I donate?

You will receive a confirmation email with the details on your contribution. Once the campaign ends the project owner will get in touch with you individually to coordinate any rewards.

Is there a limit to how much I can donate?

Yes. The maximum individual online contribution using PAYPAL is $2000.00 USD per transaction and a maximum of 4 (four) donations per donor PER CAMPAIGN. So you can donate up to 4 times for any campaign. There is no limit for donations by check.

How much of my donation goes to the campaign?

It varies depending on the level you choose. Standard fundraisers keep 95% of their donations. Managed campaigns (where thank you rewards are fulfilled with SocialArchitect.com merchandise) send 70% of the donation to the campaign owner. In some cases we will waive all fees.

Who do I contact if I have a question?

Any campaign related question should be addressed to the campaign owner. Any site related question should be directed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
